Opening Theme by Matthew McClelland

-------------------------------

Dichotomy is built into Kendrick Lamar’s identity. His birthday falls under the astrological sign of the Gemini (June 17, 1987). Symbolized by the twins, those born under the sign are notoriously known to carry a ‘dual’ or transmutable personality. And for Kendrick, the theme of duality has permeated into every aspect of his life and musical aesthetic.

A gifted child growing up in the poverty of Compton. School and cartoons in the mornings, house parties and shots fired outside his door in the evenings. A mother that encouraged him to dream, a father that persisted he do better. These formed an attitude that pushed Kendrick towards his meteoric rise from an unknown to the celebrated rapper-poet-prophet he’s become today -- and throughout it all, he’s been fairly vocal about his Gemini ways. The idea of two sides, contradiction and contrast, have been essential in crafting the rapper’s discography. Let’s take a closer look at how Kendrick Lamar uses duality in his music.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Notice how all his hit songs are ironic. Swimming Pools- an anti drinking song masked as a club banger, king Kunta- collocation of king next to a slave, humble- Kendrick's most braggadocious beat telling people to humble themselves

Kinda wish you had talked about D.N.A as a song, as it's built around Kendrick discussing the contradictions build into him. But all in all, another great video!

This is the first video I have seen that accurately identifies the duality in his music, but its much deeper then what I believe you guys are getting at in this video. This man's whole discography is telling a story based on the premise of him asking himself "Why" - why me, why am I the person speaking to the world through my music. Is it because I'm the greatest rapper of all time who got here by coincidence or am I God's messenger and ended up here because it was my destiny. Listen to his projects from start to finish from C4 all the way through Damn and you will notice that each album/project ended with either K.Dot the greatest rapped of all time or Kendrick Lamar Leader/prophet on the final track at the end of the album. Its a linear story of a Gemini trying to figure out his purpose in life. Damn was just the album that decided to kill off K.Dot or Kendrick depending on whether or not the album should be listened to in reverse or not. Its up for you to decide which one is alive or dead at the end.

He even applied this dichotomy notion when constructing the album for Black Panther. He told the same story from two very different perspectives - the reluctant king, and the ambitious underdog/ the hero and the villain. The lyrics for each song work as commentary for either character (King T'Challa or Erik Killmonger), showing how those who take up just causes can make horrible choices, and those who make horrible choices can be just. He's a brilliant rapper, complex, thought-provoking and insightful.
