I ran a bar near a pricey private liberal arts university. A young guy came in and asked what my best scotch was. I told him, and he proceeded to order a pint of my best offing with mountain dew. I refused to make the aforementioned drink and asked him for his ID. 21 years old. I went through an exhaustive process of what he was looking for in tonight's drinking experience. We settled on a proper single malt with a couple of cubes. He thoroughly enjoyed a night at a bar, talking to the usual suspects, did not make a mess of hims4lf. He would come in once a week and ask me what to drink. Three years later, he rolled in on graduation weekend and announced me to his parents as his "drinking professor." One of the proudest moments in my bartender career was when dad slipped me a c note, and thanked me.

Great guide here! Something for cocktail newbies to note: Unless you're going to a cocktail bar that serves quality drinks (which is not what most new 21 year olds tend to do) just be aware that a disappointingly high number of bartenders have no idea how to make a classic daiquiri. I've asked for a daiquiri at so many places and been answered with "we don't do frozen drinks" only to tell them I want a plain lime daiquiri, straight up or on the rocks, not frozen. They just stare back at me like I'm insane. I've had to tell too many bartenders how to make one of the simplest drinks of all time. So if you go out and ask for a daiquiri, don't be surprised if you get a strawberry slurpee with rum instead of what you see here.

I’m 23, so still a relative newbie to the cocktail world. My first cocktail was the Moscow Mule. Wasn’t all that wowed, but the summer after I turned 21 I got into rum. Started making Mojitos out of my backpack under a bridge in the Keys. I did not take Greg’s advice on tiki drinks, and that fall I started my tiki journey with the Zombie! To all the almost 21 year olds out there, do some research on spirits and cocktails, then experiment! Go to a good cocktail bar and try some things that interest you, then buy the bottles you enjoy, make the drinks, and share them with friends. Happy mixing!

As a 20 something year cocktail veteran, almost every drink on this video is still near the top of my “favorites” list. They’re accessible but still very drinkable no matter how long you’ve been drinking

Kids these days (she said unironically, oy) are still drinking before 21 just like the rest of us always did, but man are they doing it smarter than we ever did. Borgs are such a great idea, lots of sugar from koolaid and such, electrolytes and a water base to keep you hydrated, and bringing and using only your own vessel to keep yourself safe? I think these kids are going to be alright, and I hope they try some of these cocktails!

Here's a tip I learned from the guest. For umbrellas the top band is to keep the umbrella closed for shipment. The bottom band that is on the pick that we think has no use is actually there so that when you open the umbrella you push the bottom band up the pick to the umbrella base so that the umbrella doesn't slide back down and stays open.

This is perfect! My son turns 21 in three weeks and has been asking me what to drink. Lol. He is absolutely hooked on your vids and introduced me to your channel a while back. Thanks for this one especially.

As a European having your first ever cocktail at 21 is a mind-boggling concept

I agree with the Whiskey sour as a first cocktail. However, I would say to make sure you are at a bar that will use fresh ingredients. The drink Greg made is vastly different from a sports bar whiskey sour that is sour mix, well whiskey and ice.

Before I even knew I wanted to be a Bartender, whiskey sour was the first drink I ever made at home. First one I made the day I turned 21. It’s a fantastic introduction to cocktails, it’s got a little bit of everything you can expect from the cocktail world.

1:05 Funny, I was taught that sweet alcoholic drinks were called "dangerous drinks" because you could easily end up drinking a bunch of them back to back because you don't really taste any alcohol (or very little). And you could easily drink enough to get plastered before your body had absorbed all of the alcohol, which would end up with it hitting you all at once.

My first cocktail when I turned 21 was a drink that the bar I was at called the "Dangerous Summer". It looked and tasted every bit like a daiquiri (rum-based, very tart and lime-forward), and to this day I have no idea what kind of rocket fuel they put in that, but it SENT me. Through means I will not disclose, I was able to get my hands on alcohol prior to that point, so I was accustomed to doing shots of stuff like vodka. This was on another level. I was halfway into that drink and already leaning against the bar for balance. My friends there were concerned. I then went on to order two more drinks, drunkenly staggered to a card shop with my friends, tried to play a round of Weiss Scharz (super weeb anime card game), failed miserably because I literally couldn't read the card text on my own cards and forgot what they did, and then blacked out and woke up at my dorm. Apparently I played two more rounds, won both somehow, and had to be escorted home by one of my friends. It was exactly everything I expected from my 21st birthday, and my only regret is not getting the ingredients for the "Dangerous Summer".

As someone who recently finished college, my go-to cheapo cocktail is the lunchbox, which is made with a shot of (boxed, from concentrate) orange juice, a shot of amaretto, and about a half a can of light beer. I know the ingredients sound somewhat insane but it all goes together surprisingly well to make a pretty well-balanced easy sipper that I think lands somewhere between pretty and very good.

I'm Mormon, I don't drink, I've never had alcohol, but even I watch this dudes videos, they're that good. They're literally therapeutic... the music, the liquids pouring, the sounds of shaking fluids or cracking ice... I've even started ordering 0abv/reverse distilled spirits to make my own mocktails with. I got bit by the bug, and its this guys' fault haha.

My first cocktail at 21 was a Mai Tai after hearing you sing its praises years ago. Did not disappoint. Normally its too much effort for me, so I just stick to making daiquiris. It amazes me how varied they can be depending on the rum.

My first drink at 21 was a bottle of grocery store Chianti because I thought it was fancy and also I saw Anthony Hopkins talk about it in the Silence of the Lambs 🤷‍♀️

Its interesting hearing what you consider a dangerous drink, I've always used that term to refer to any drink that masks the flavour of the alcohol to the point a person may forget it's alcoholic especially a drink that has a higher alcohol percentage in the first place which makes it easier for a person to get drunk pretty fast
