Undercover in a Stolen Phone Market in India

I went undercover in a stolen phone market in India. This is where your phone might end up! Stolen and recycled phones end up here from pickpocket gangs and electronic recyclers for resale. Fake Chinese iPhones are sold here too. Avoid shopping at these black markets. I'll also tell you how to avoid pickpockets.

To avoid pickpockets and protect yourself from theft, here are some practical tips you can follow:

Stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to the people around you and any suspicious behaviour. Stay alert in crowded areas, public transportation, tourist spots, and busy streets.

Keep your valuables hidden: Avoid displaying valuable items such as expensive jewellery, large amounts of cash, or flashy electronic devices. Please keep them in a secure place like a money belt, hidden pocket, or bag close to your body.

Use a money belt or secure pockets: Money belts are pouches worn around your waist, under your clothes, where you can store your passport, credit cards, and cash. Alternatively, use zippered or buttoned pockets that are harder for pickpockets to access.

Minimize your wallet contents: Carry only the necessary items with you, such as one credit card and a small amount of cash. Leave unnecessary documents, extra credit cards, and valuable items safely at your accommodation.

Avoid keeping everything in one place: Distribute your cash, cards, and identification across different pockets or compartments. This way, even if you lose something, you won't lose everything.

Be cautious in crowded places: Crowded areas are prime targets for pickpockets. Maintain extra caution in markets, public transportation, bus stops, queues, and tourist attractions. Keep your hands on your belongings and be wary of distractions created by strangers.

Secure your bags and backpacks: Use bags with secure closures like zippers, and keep them closed and in front of you, especially in crowded places. Avoid leaving bags unattended or hanging them loosely on the back of chairs.

Beware of distractions and scams: Pickpockets often work in teams, with one person distracting you while another steals your belongings. Beware of people causing a commotion, asking for directions, spilling something on you, or acting overly friendly.

Stay away from overly crowded public transport: If possible, avoid overcrowded buses, trains, or subway cars where it becomes easier for pickpockets to operate. Wait for the next one or choose a less crowded time to travel.

Trust your instincts: If something feels off or suspicious, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Personal safety should always be the priority.

Remember, no method is foolproof, but following these tips and staying vigilant can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of pickpocketing.

I still remember when I bought one plus 6 on it’s launch date back in 2018 and just after 3 days it was pick pocketed at Hauz khas metro station. That was my first and only experience of getting pickpocketed. It was 10:30 at night and I had no idea what to do next. For an hour I just stood at the station clueless. The next day I tried filing an official police complaint at the police station and this was more hurtful for me than getting my phone stolen. The cops didn’t entertain my complaint and just said “Ye sab toh hota reheta hai. Iski kya complaint likhein.” But if a VIP’s phone get stolen, it’ll take 2 hours for the cops to find it and bringit back to the person. A common man just have to take it like a good little boy.

Been in India since last May for work. Stolen phones are not worth to buy especially iPhones because its not usable when it has an Apple account. Thanks for posting this, Karl.

As much as I love Karl's videos, they've pretty much singlehandedly convinced me to never ever visit India... Too much to worry about and it's sad that such a great culture and history is ruined by rampant crime, scams, and more.

Karl, i can attest that this is how thieves do it in Europe as well. Ive had known some shady stores and people selling stolen phones prior to the smartphone era. What they did was they eirher didnt charge it or took out the battery. Sometimes they didnt even give a charger because they knew it would take time to get a charger and would get away at it. Btw love these exploration vids. I feel like i am with you on the streets of Mumbai or wherever.
