The album/film is based off of Freud's theory of the "Madonna/Whore" complex. The idea that a woman in society is either viewed (by men) as a pure, innocent, nurturing caretaker, or an impulsive, wreckless, sexual degenerate. To have both is perceived as unnatural. This is Halsey's way of reclaiming her identity and establishing the fact that they can have one side of that dichotomy without destroying or sabotaging the other. The "dark Halsey" is the emodiment of promiscuity, while the "light Halsey" is the softer, more maternal end of that spectrum.

Fun fact: Easier Than Lying is mainly not about a relationship or female empowerment but about parents and the people who raised you being angry at how you turned out.
