We can grow shoes in the lab. Yeah it struck me as crazy also, but it's true. A start up company, Modern Synthesis, are growing shoes made of cellulose in the lab using bacteria. This week I'm taking a look at whether these shoes can help tackle the problems brought on by fast fashion. And how as we learn to engineer nature to our needs, nature is also teaching us how to do better engineering.

I guess being the kind of person that never cared about fashion, prefers long lasting items and wear them until they disintegrate….isn’t all bad…

New to the channel. I love the depth and explanations in your videos. In my opinion, your videos are criminally under viewed.

This would be an awesome concept for building houses in my view and have the ability to allow homes to "Grow" (of course land laws might need to be revisited) but absolutely cool for sure

The lengths to which humans will go in order to do frivolous things like buy new shoes every year

There are some very successful mycelium based leathers on the market now that was almost indistinguishable from animal leather as they are protein based.

8:32 - Why not just issue every runner the same shoes? Same for Olympics tech. Everyone should get the same tech. It's not like we don't have enough resources to go around...

8:28 I wish there was a "branch" of sports that encourage technological doping. Biological doping should be a no-no, since they practically inevitably come with health risks to the athlete, but things like innovative shoes like for the marathoner, the shark skin inspired swim suit of the US team at the (2012?) Olympics, some ski jump suits if I remember correctly, and special ice skating skates absolutely should. Basically, as long as it's not invasive or harmful to the athlete it should be allowed. Even things like powered exoskeletons. Though probably there should be a class for actively/externally powered devices, and one for devices that only enhance the athletes own abilities? Yes, records there shouldn't be official world records, but only be valid within the TechSport. My rationale is that this would be a fun and interesting way to stimulate innovation. E.g. if someone wants to win the power-marathon they could make an exoskeleton that's lighter and more efficient than their competitors. Also, it would make college sports more interesting for us Nerds. No more jocks only 😁. Having a good coder on your team could help you win. For best results, of course you need actual athletes, but I think this would come organically. First it might just be a couple of geeks having fun, seeing who can make a tool to make them jump the highest, but then some jock will want to shoe them they can jump higher, even without the device, and then it will be "but you would be able to jump even higher with the device", etc, etc. Actually this might work better as a movie plot.. at least at first, but then, look at parkour.. Totally unheard of outside a small group in France before the movie District 13. It's not in the Olympics yet, but it's definitely considered a sport

The saying is” If a tree Falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it does it make a SOUND?” The answer is no because hearing is one of the 5 human senses... A perturbation in the atmosphere strikes the eardrum, PERCEPTION. This is mechanically converted to an electrical impulse sent to the Hearing center in the brain, COGNITION. Then in the MIND we make a DISCERNMENT, a judgement for a sound is a construct of the observer. Remove the observer and reality is removed as there is no longer any human experience to refer to. People who claim to know the nature of things without using human experience ie thought experiments are akin to a movie critic who watches five seconds of the middle of a movie and then will tell you exactly how it started and how it will end as only a fool believes the sooth sayers for the The sun and earth know where each other is at every moment otherwise how is a stable orbit achieved but for faster than light communication is the stars are in motion and the galaxies are in motion and everything knows its place at every moment. Those who conducts thought experiments will admit that light experiences no time to travel this means but for Einsteins Time frame of reference is relative but in reality there is no time as this is a human construct in and of itself as time and space are but a measure and measurements are what observers do to communicate with others who have not measured(witnessed) If there was only one being there would be no need to measure as everything would simply be as it take two entities for information to exist as the concept of the foot existed before the first ruler was crowned king.

If we're going to take care of the planet, we must be like the planet. Nearly all the answers to our problems can be found in nature. I think lots of people need to get more in touch with nature, and see that they grow out of this earth. Therefore everyone has a responsibility to live in balance with nature.

The planet doesn't suffer it is the humans that suffer as the conditions we are adapted to are being actively changed by us through these industrial, commercial and cultural practices. The planet will just go on existing after us right?

if they are gonna make shoes, they could atleast make them decent design.... look at that heel.... it sticks back a mile...... its practically a backwards flipper....... if you want people to want yoru product make something respectable.................. personally, if its not toe shoes or a boot, its not worth my time. PS. if it cant be worn, then it dosnt count at all.........if it dosnt do the thing its supposed to do, its a fail.
