In this film, the GP is seeing a patient who has a depressive disorder. The patient describes symptoms including low mood, tearfulness, reduced energy, reduced motivation, early morning wakening, loss of appetite, weight loss, poor concentration, reduced enjoyment and reduced interest in self-care.

The GP explores the effect of the symptoms on other people in the patient's life, explores the past history of low mood, and makes an assessment of suicide risk. The GP then gives the patient an explanation of depression.

Please note that this video has been made by the University of Nottingham for teaching purposes. The psychiatrist is a real psychiatrist but the patient is played by an actor.

I hate how depression is portrayed as just someone acting sad. A lot of people with depression put on a happy face. They will joke with you. And then one day if the pain gets too much, kill themselves. Some people with depression struggle with expressing it.

I have been depressed before and I feel that this actress portrayed exactly how I felt. spot on. with low speaking voice, crying on a dime, looking sat the floor. Very well portrayed.

I applaud these women for recreating what a person experiences dealing with depression. Mental illness needs to be address more in our society with understanding, compassion, listening, support, love. Thank you.

I've had depression since about age 13 and I'm 41 now. It's basically a curse that never ends. Antidepressants, exercise, prayer, etc., reduce it but it never fully lifts. Prior to going to rehab I at least had the pleasure of feeling good when under the influence. Now I have sobriety and depression -- I'm back where I started.

I feel so sad watching this because I still have remnants of moderate depression, I know how she feels too well.

Man, the Depression patient is seriously a wonderful actress! She isn't overdoing it and isn't stigmatizing it! She and the doctor both verbalized how my depression is. I really want to know why we patients with depression have bursts of sadness when there's nothing to be sad about! My heart breaks for this woman and I'm wondering if she may actually have depression. <3

I'm a licensed therapist and professor in the US and I struggle to find videos for students. Here, the actress is astonishingly believable and real--but the clinician is also really, really skillful. This social worker exemplifies caring, thorough, thoughtful assessment. Really skillfully done. Any student of therapy should hold her up as a role model.

It's always been "Okay, lets take a look at these options" and then they send me off on my own to be depressed some more...

She uses a lot of close-ended questions and leads quite a bit, but her line of questioning seems fairly solid

There is some wonderful casting and great acting here. The industrial/educational videos in the states are filled with terrible indicating and overacting and sadly sometimes its not even the actors fault as they are asked to "act" that way at the request of the directors or producers. This is honest and truthful. Wonderful!

This was very well done, and thanks for captioning them. I will use this for my abnormal psychology class in the USA. Thank you for making these public.

Honestly here because I’ve just been crying and so sad lately. Been depressed since 15 and have tried to take my life a few times. It got so bad in 2018-19 that my body felt literally numb, no emotions nothing, I just felt empty for months at a time. Yes I do have good days but the pain never really stops. I’d never wish it upon anyone and I pray that anyone going through a similar experience gets through it.

Brilliant videos. I've never actually watched something more informative than this. Congratulations! It'd be nice to have a second video, adjunct to the interview, where the doctor briefly discusses the case highlighting the major features (especially those which might have gone unnoticed) and then discuss the treatment. What drugs? What psychotherapy? What kind of follow-up should be done? Thank you!
