For some reason, this song makes me think of a James Bond theme. Actually, quite a few of his songs do. I mean that in a good way! They have this kind of grand, bombastic, intensely dramatic feeling. Mysterious, romantic, a little dangerous.

it's a shame that gotye appears to be doomed to be known for just one song, when there are so many other works of his that are just as powerful and beautiful as (some even more than) somebody that i used to know - i have the making mirrors album and it is brilliant, and i am considering getting like drawing blood, after falling in love with it on spotify
gotye is my favourite artist that i have discovered this year - STIUTK was the bait, and I'm glad that I took it... cos it led to me more :)

The first two verses seem as though they're about insecurity surrounding the desires you wish you could suppress.

^This is a verse that's very in character for the video. He's playing the role of this guy on stage saying "What could you possibly want that makes it so hard for you to share? Show your faith in your peers such that they can do so for you!"
Everyone is afraid to take that first step.
Now, the only things that throw me off are these biblical talks and the chorus asking "what do you want FROM US". Perhaps he's speaking to everyone with regards to everyone else?

thats the problem with music these days. You ether create a HIT song that they will overplay your music on the radios for everyone to hear, or they'll completely ignore you because music companies will not pay radio stations tons of money to play your music because it won't earn them money.
