This was Indianapolis 500 number 17 for me. It was the first for my wife. Parked against the fence in turn 3 with a pickup truck and 8' X 8' plywood deck over the truck bed. Drove in at 5 AM when the gates opened. We cooked a bacon and eggs breakfast on a Coleman stove. The whole area smelled like a breakfast kitchen as everyone was cooking. A few hours later, Tom Carnegie would cue his microphone over the Speedway public address system.. testing 1, 2, 3.. GOOD MORNING RACE FANS ! A few hours later we would crack open our first beers. Pabst Blue Ribbon, Strohs and Miller. Cold beer and cold fried chicken for the afternoon. Turn 3 was different back then. It later became a bit more crazy. People burning old furniture they had brought along. Then the burning of whole automobiles! In the following years the Speedway moved to change the infield to get rid of all the craziness. What's now called "The Snakepit" is nothing like the old Snakepit we had from the 60's, 70's and 80's. It now consists of a stage for rappers and hip-hop performers. The youth of today can appreciate this Snakepit party. I can have my fond memories of the old Turn 3. We can only hope things will get back to normal at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Thankfully, we have Roger Penske running things now. Oh yeah.. this video by far has the best resolution yet for the 1980 race. Thanks for posting it.

I was like 14 years old. I was there. I was rooting for Tim Richmond because Q95 was a sponsor and the station really pushed him. They gave the car a name, Starcruiser or something. Sad the way Richmond died so young.

This was at a time when my parents, brother, and I would listen to the race live on radio during the afternoon and then watch the videotape of the race on TV that evening (there would be no live TV coverage until 1986). Millions of other families had this same Memorial Day weekend tradition.

John Barnard designed the winning car in his dad's living room in Wembley, London.

Lone Star JR was always my mom's favorite driver. I think she somehow envied Betty.

Very interesting that Johncock tried to put the same move on Bettenhausen at the finish that Rick Mears tried on Johncock only two years after this! Nice to see the focus on the Johncock/Bettenhausen battle for 3rd at the finish, as this was Bettenhausen's best finish at Indy.

Remember watching the 46 move up the pylon, hoping that Gary B could bring that old Wildcat home. The group of us in the stands, timing diff drivers at the end, trying to figure out if he could catch Sneva and JR. Love the old races on the YouTube.
