At 1:13:49 the guy in the blue suit carrying Johncock's helmet is Dr. Stephen Olvey. The man credited with making INDY Car have excellent medical care right there on the track, not later at the hospital.

I sat in the inside of the track on Pit Row with a group of STP employees. When the STP car driven by Johncock touched the 4th turn wall and spun toward the pits, a woman sitting next to me jumped up, grabbed my arm, cutting me with her fingernails, and knocked me off my seat. The bleachers were concrete, and I fell against the seat in front of me, scraping my shins. I did get a lot of free STP stuff. Ah! The memories! That year I was able to be in Indy for the whole month of May.

It's great that we have live coverage now, but man, that shot at 2:45...

46:09 - To this day I have no clue how Patrick Bedard survived that accident.

Jim McKay opened the telecast live, even though the race was on tape, because his commentary of the middle of the race was done as the edited tape was being broadcast.
His commentary of the start, the first few laps, the last few laps, and the finish were done as they happened.
Since the telecast was taped and edited (for showing that same evening), it was just better to do it that way.

Gosh, that open with Jim's narration and that smooth transition from the empty track at nightfall to the capacity crowd was a thing of beauty. No offense to NBC, much offense to ESPN on ABC, but NO ONE could cover Indy as well as ABC Sports.
And this was even before the perfection of Paul Page and Delta Force and Live Flag to Flag coverage.
