From emotional beginnings in D.C. to the emo revival, emo has seen it all. Emo’s not dead. Let's be honest, we've all been a little emo at some point. In this video I go over the history of Midwest EMO. A cozy, soft, melodic sound that defined the 90s. From punk rock and hardcore roots, to mainstream success and rise and fall and the emo revival. From D.C to warped tour to When We Were Young. From Rites of Spring to American Football, to Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, the promise ring, braid, to Blink 182, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Paramore to Modern Baseball, Title Fight, Touche Amore, Joyce Manor, Pool Kids, Oso Oso, Hot Mulligan, Neck Deep, Origami Angel, Spanish Love Songs, Alkaline Trio and Glass Beach. Embrace Midwest EMO and the 902s/2000s nostalgia and be an elder emo.

The 90s emo scene (if you want to call it a scene) had such a high density of amazing bands. Sunny Day Real Estate, Braid, Mineral, Texas is the Reason, Rainer Maria, The Get Up Kids, Cap n’ Jazz, Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Knapsack, Everyone Asked About You, Christie Front Drive, Boys Life, Jejune, American Football, Endive, and more.

Was never into emo when I was a teenager but now twenty years later I'm starting to appreciate it more and more.

i'm 40 and grew up on this stuff. i'm a barber and i was cutting a 24 year olds hair the other day and we got on to talking about emo via hardcore. he told me the first time he ever heard American Football was AT A CONCERT. i was like "bruh...i hate you." lol

God the water boy returns fucks so hard I can’t even argue. Probably my favorite off of that album. All around great takes. Can we get a playlist on Apple or YouTube for both this video and the last one 🥹🥹

I come from Extreme metal, especially Death-Doom. I found "I Hate Myself:10 Songs" and really loved the sound and emotion, im not sure how it were mixed up in my music but im glad it did. It took me down a rabbit hole, into Screamo & Midwest in an effort to find similar vibes. American Football is great, got their first two albums. Vs Self is great too, love their album "Everything Seems better now" just wish i could snag it on CD! Music I want preserved beyond digital media. Camping in Alaska, Fkin supreme too. Hits the feels, but in a good way. Great video, and i definitely gleaned to learn more about Midwest Emo.

I have to admit, I'm blown away by the fact that you ignored the massive Asian midwest emo scene entirely. It's probably bigger over there than it ever was here, and you didn't even breathe a word of it. I'm stunned.

Third comment, so you know the video stuck with me. It's a good video! I'd love one on the history of post-hardcore or the history of pop-punk.

what a great video!! I myself am a former indie rock artist BUT my newest album Losercore drops on March 29th and is VERY Midwest emo/math rock derived. I've always loved the genre but never had the balls to jump into it haha. I kinda played around with a more midwest emo sound on my last album, Carpe Diem but it feels really good to just jump 10 toes deep into it now. Excited to share my project with the world and am proud to contribute to the ever expanding Genre that is, Midwest Emo.
