Madison Cunningham looked thoroughly put together behind the Tiny Desk in her white satin pantsuit and powder blue blouse, but her performance didn't seem at all buttoned-up. The clear leader of her band of crack, Southern California musicians — keyboardist Philip Krohnengold, bassist Daniel Rhine and drummer Kyle Crane — she was also our audacious guide, steering us toward exploration with the shrewd parts she played on three different guitars over the course of four songs.

A West Coast native herself, she's learned well the liberating lessons of Joni Mitchell and much more recent predecessors like Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird and Chris Thile, who welcomed her into a scene that celebrates the splintering of familiar folk, indie rock and singer-songwriter song forms.

The songs that Cunningham selected for her Tiny Desk, culled from her third album, Revealer — out in early September — are alive with new sensations. She opens with "All I've Ever Known," and makes the confession of an artist only getting started, but powerfully awake to possibility: "I'm afraid of what I don't know." "Hospital," a song whose wiry, tunefully loopy vocal lines and guitar licks stayed lodged in my head for days, transforms a setting that's become a symbol of doom into somewhere that she could face her own overstimulated extremes.

The other musicians left Cunningham alone behind the desk to conclude with her quietly riveting song "Life According To Raechel," written after her grandmother passed, she tells us. Eyes closed, Cunningham took in the loss like she knew it would be the first of many.

Gaaaah thank you NPR Music for having us! This came at a moment where I was (and still am) particularly proud of these songs and their evolution, with this force of a band made up of my favorite people. Thank you thank you!

"Life According to Raechel" has to go down as one of the greatest songs to appear on Tiny Desk.

One of the best Tiny Desk Concerts ever. She is the complete musician and performer. Enchanting singer, next-level guitar player, and creative songwriter. Hospital is one of my favorite songs of the past several years.

It’s rare that you can identify a generational talent before they’re known as one, but Madison is that and more.

"Life According to Raechel" completely wrecked me. Jesus, this is one of the most simply beautiful Tiny Desks I have ever seen.

If you are just seeing Madison for the first time... The Paste Studio recording "Pin It Down' with Beth Goodfellow on drums and Daniel on Bass. The Porter's Gate recording "Little Things with Great Love" The "Riverman" recording in the front yard. The "Neighbor Song" with Lake Street Dive Any of the Live from Here recordings. These just scratch the surface of Madison's talent.

Wowee, her music sounds like... MUSIC! Real, organic, textured music. With shapes and turns and unexpected moments. I love it!

She serves the song at 95 mph right at the baseline with a side of fries. Her ego is so secondary as to be invisible. She is hitting micro-cents...sliding where she intends...nailing where she intends. Her guitar work is so well couched as to lock the song in place. Subtle and in your face. love it.

Life According to Rachael stopped me in my tracks… one minute I’m doing the dishes and the next I’m standing in the middle of the kitchen with tears thinking about my grandmother. Beautifully done, as always 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I am mystified as to how Madison can get through the last song without shedding a single tear, it makes me weep every time. What an absolutely beautiful love song for her grandmother. Wonderful performance :,)

I'm so happy to see real behind-the-desk Tiny Desk concerts have returned, and I can't think of anyone I've wanted to see here more than Madison Cunningham. Like others, I've followed her and listened to her since she popped up on one of Chis Thile's wonderful (and badly missed) NPR shows. I'm a lifetime musician myself, and believe that Madison Cunningham is about the best singer/songwriter/guitarist out there today. I wonder how many people who first hear her realize how good she is. I know she impresses the likes of Thile, also Andrew Bird and others. Her songs are full of beautiful melody and rhythmic and phrase subtleties. Her guitar playing is not flashy but totally original, tasteful, and inimitable. Plus she's got an angel's voice. She's always prepared and performs superbly. Madison Cunningham is a musician's musician. Thanks to NPR for putting her on.

“Life According to Raechel” is such a beautiful tribute. The pandemic also took my grandparents, who were still full of personality and adventure. Hearing this, I can’t help but think of them. Thanks Madison

I can't get through this performance of "Life According to Raechel" without crying. I listen to this concert over and over, but have to stop before that song sometimes just to avoid breaking down in tears, because sometimes it's not just one or two tears, it's great big sobs. I don't know how she performs it without collapsing on stage. What a song. What an artist. I feel so fortunate that Madison Cunningham shares her art with us.

YES! I've been patiently waiting for this moment since discovering Madison Cunningham a couple of years ago. She's phenomenal. It's great to see her getting the exposure and recognition she deserves!
