The historic Battle of Hastings took place on October 14, 1066, between the English and the invading Normans for the throne of England. The conflict arose from the complex political question of who had the rightful claim to the English throne. The Battle of Hastings was decisive, with the Normans utilizing tactics like feigned retreats and the use of cavalry, leading to King Harold's defeat and the eventual coronation of William The Conquerer as King William of England.

Learning about the Battle of Hastings is always fascinating! This pivotal moment in history decided the fate of England, and the tactics used by the Normans, like feigned retreats and cavalry, were game-changers. Thanks for this informative video!

My father is a 93 years old former Cornish farmer. In 2022 he attended a rugby match. It was being played at Camborne. When he shouted out, "Come on Cornwall!" A middle-aged Camborne man shouted, "Wos yor nem met?" Father told him; Our surname is Bretonek. The Cambornerthal shouted, " Thadinna Cornesh nem issuh?". Father replied, " No, my lot came over with the Normans":washhands:. The Cambornerthal asked, "Norman who?" The crowd in our stand collapsed in laughter, and sprayed beer! Father got a standing ovation. One voice shouted, "Better the Normans, than the invaders from over the Tamar!" I wonder what was inferred there🤔. Small minds are so easily Conquered, their lands so easily laid to waste...Mos yn rag ha sewini: onan hag oll mebyon😉👍.

An excellent narration!! Thank you. Marching 200 miles in four days? Really? 50 miles a day - have done 25 miles "forced march" in the ATC as a healthy youth - but another 25......then having to fight!

My Norman ancestors came over with duke William in 1066 and finally left (England) in 1635 (for America) just ahead of the English Civil War....

It's very unlikely that the depiction of the soldier with the arrow in his eye was Harold as he was holding a spear, Kings of this era would have carried swords.

Also, it's Harold Godwinson and Tostig Godwinson. Not just Godwin, that was their father's name.

Very interesting account of the battle. The arrow in the eye account is now believed to be wrong. Harold was cut down. The tapestry detail was fudged in the 19th century.

If... Harold had immediately thrown his first line into the archers to drive them back on the Norman Infantry and then sent the wings of his second line to attack the Norman horse as they went for the first lines flanks.... he mighta won.

William was just lucky. Harold's men were exhausted.

It's a little known fact that before the battle (Norman word) of Stanford Bridge, the Norwegians of Hardrada didn't have their armor, (their Holbrooks - mail shirts of the period) and so were unprepared for the fight (English word) being as they were unprepared. Sending some troops back to York to get their mail was done, but only a few already prepared to do battle against the English. This is one of the factors in the fight....

Here's a question: Could Godwinson have won if he hadn't had to fight the Vikings before William?

hard to believe today there was a time when a norwegian king was a serious military contender for the English crown..

Hard to imagine England forming lines of battle, and no archers…
