The first time I tried the eye pressure method I was giggling like a kid within 10 minutes. I wasnt expecting that intensity. It Only took a moment to build from subtle to ... WOW. The pregression is exactly as you described! Exactly. Like there were kinda 3 phases. For me it was something like this.
0:00-10:00. Occasional shadow crosses field of view. Color splotches
10:00-13:00. gears, wheels, starfish with dozens of legs, reflection of my own eye (all spinning)
13:00+brief shots of people, presented much like in a commercial or movie, other random things like a car, rooms etc. I think I'll do this right now!

I follow that second thing you mentioned nearly every night. I don't see lines, colors or stars. The best I can describe it as is patches of static. If I'm mentally stimulated and need to shut off, I put all of my focus onto what I see with my eyes closed. I look for the flashes of light if I'm not seeing much. Most of the time I can see something going on immediately. Then I focus on trying to control it. I try to make the blotches of static brighter and consume more of my vision, or let the darkness overwhelm the blotches. Eventually I lose control of my mind and the blotches morph into images and then I am asleep.
And when I say I focus on what I see, I am referring to a very strange sensation. When I'm lost in thought, I feel like I'm in the back of my head. When I focus on what I am seeing, I feel like I'm rushing forward. So everytime I use this technique to calm my mind. I will slip up and fall back into whatever it was I was thinking about. Then I rush forward and those thoughts become quiet.
I've always assumed I'm practicing some sort of meditation but don't know much about it.
