As a kid, I watched both Survivor Man and Man Vs Wild. I was more entertained with Man Vs Wild because it was scripted/paced like a movie.
Survivor Man felt too real, even as a kid. Les Stroud has said many times that in actual survival situations, there's a lot of doing nothing. And that the most deadly killer is actually a lack of sleep. Les Stroud is a legit certified survival instructor and learns from indigenous locals prior to every filming. He actually has a Youtube channel where he tells stories from every episode, and all his encounters with random people in the wilderness.

Its funny how when i was younger, i looked up to this man. I was in the scouts in the UK for about 6 years, and he was essentially the patron of scouts. There was even one time where he recorded a special video that was played at one of the scout meetings we had at the village hall, although that was probably distributed to tons of other scout groups. I watched all the episodes and thought he was so cool. He still has a small portion of my heart, but i can tell you know, it is so very much smaller than what is was when i was younger.

Les Stroud literally risked his life for Survivorman. He was chased by a jaguar, had heat stroke in the Australian outback, caught a terrible stomach bug after eating a turtle(?) in the Georgian Swamps, had a polar bear walk right past his sleeping bag while he was in there sleeping, and risked his life in Norway as well. He was also lost at sea without any communication with his crew for a long time during an episode, and was caught in a huge storm with a raft that kept filling up with water.

Back when this show was at its peak and few realized it was fake yet, Bear came to the Black Hills of South Dakota where I grew up. He filmed in locations I had hiked barefoot in a diaper as a kid, and made it seem like death was around every corner. The Black Hills are 100 miles by 60 miles and contain over 1 million miles of roads because of extensive logging and ranching. I have been extremely lost there before, and all you have to do is walk for 20-30 minutes and you WILL come across a gravel or dirt road, and after that in 1-2 hours a forest service ranger, or a rancher will inevitably drive up and ask if you need help. Also, it was summer, and there are literally forest service campgrounds EVERYWHERE that are almost always full all summer long! You have to try hard to die in the Black Hills. When people do die, it's usually because they were really drunk while camping and drowned or fell off a cliff, or they were booze cruising.

Bear Gryll's "Man vs Wild" was the only show me and my dad watched on the Discovery Channel. The show was entertaining to watch and pass the time. Funny thing, I actually learned Geography through this show because I always wondered where the places Bear went to were located on a map. Good times man.

Gotta admit, I love the show. Though I questioned how real it could be with the camera crew being there, I was surprised to find out how much of it was planned/scripted/false. Weirdly enough, it ended up making its way into being one of my most favoured comfort shows to have on in the background lol!

I always knew Bear Grylls received help from his crew and had proper food and camping equipment to make his journeys a bit easier, I just never knew that the "help" included staying at hotels and basically creating a movie set. I always thought that they actually camped in the wilderness and still had a difficult trek.

Bear had a camera crew monitor him at all times in Man Vs. Wild. None of this should be shocking to anyone that the TV show was scripted.
