In Marseille, gangs fighting for territory have become more violent; setting on fire their rivals, kidnapping, torturing and killing young people to send messages to rival gangs. Most of these crimes have been happening in the Quartiers Nord, an area that according to the families of the victims, has been neglected by the state which allowed crime to proliferate.

VICE gains access to the criminals operating in the area who reveal how the traffic of drugs and weapons works, as well as a young lookout and drug dealer. We then speak to Amine, whose brother was brutally murdered at 22 years old and his body was later found burned in the boot of a car.

It's hard to imagine that 25 deaths a year is considered "most dangerous"

I see a lot of people talking about the murder rate being low. I actually live in France and the translations are wrong , "20 deaths a year" isnt what the guy was saying , he was talking about how there are shootings occuring everywhere in Marseille. As a matter of fact , Marseille had 25 murders from June to September 2021 according to official figures so theres no way Marseille only has 25 homicides in a year. Bear in mind The city of Marseille's population is only 878,320 inhabitants, so the murder rate is quite high for a European city

25 deaths a year would be considered an all time low record in my city, so sad.

I moved to Marseille 6 months ago, and it really is a great city just like many others. You'd be surprised how friendly the locals are, just as long as you stay out of the few rough areas

neighbourhoods like this exist all over europe, his balcony view is so much like just visiting an ex of mine who lived in an area that has been talked about similarly, and the layout is exctly the same.

Big respect to the guy who's brother was killed that he chose the path of love instead of seeking for vengeance.

I moved from Australia to play Rugby for Marseille- I can honestly say this is an over exaggeration of the danger. This would be par with every city in the world, especially in low socioeconomic areas.

when the video description gives you more information about the subject than a 10min video interviewing and following those guys ...

I went from living in Chicago to Providence,Rhode Island. Feeling confident that Providence is regarded as a safe city and it is, There was a very small area of the city where most of the crime and homicides occurred. It was scary living in that area too.

It's not so much the numbers of the death, it is the brutality of them which has only worsen over the last couple of years (kidnappers filming the victims being tortured for example). Plus Marseille enjoys a prime location for drug trafficking being on the coast. Today, French police are scared to get in these "cités" (building blocks) because they might not get out alive. A really amazing French film you might want to watch to understand the situation there is "Bac Nord". Came out last year, can't recommend it enough :)

Much like in other cities, the architecture of these areas make them hard to police. Tower blocks give criminals a look out, a labyrinth to hide themselves and their product in, and a fort, all in one.

here in Recife-Brazil only on february of this year we had 260 murders. Oh God, I wish that my hometown was this dangerous as Marseille. Being brutally honest, putting the reality where I live in perspective Marseille sounds to me like a very safe city. Don´t get me wrong I would love that Recife had this numbers.

Main difference between america and Marseilles (and all the dangerous cities in France/Europe) is that in Marseilles it is mostly about criminal organisations figthing each other for the business, it's well organized and ppl don't want to be arrested for dumb reasons. In America you can get shot anywhere by a crackhead that is ready to kill just to get enough money for his daily crack. So in Marseilles, if you stay away from criminal organization or the dangerous parts of the city you will be fine overall, in America you can get killed anywhere And I find weird that some americans in the comment almost act like they are "proud" that their country is more dangerous

I've been living in Marseille for 10 years, it's the most beautiful city in the South of France, I've never seen or exposed to any kind of violence. This documentary makes it sound like living here is risk but it's not actually. Like in any country in the world if you are involved in any kind of bad activity you expose yourself to danger.

Your very brave for visiting marseille ….. their were 32 murders in 2022 and these people need to be stopped. France is beautiful 🇫🇷. This is a crime wave and we need more recognition from the world with what’s going on. Canada is also bad right now
