We are back in China!!! In this video, we arrived in the coldest city in China...Harbin.
Harbin is the number one tourist destination in China at the moment because of the Famous Harbin Ice Festival. This has been on our bucket list ever since we found out about it. So even though the Canadian travel advisory has a warning against going to China, we flew to Harbin as soon as we got the chance. We were more at ease about being in China this time since it was our third time flying to the country. BUT many of you guys expressed your concerns and worries about us coming to Harbin with just the clothes and jackets we bought from Chongqing. And your comments also made us worried, and fear that we would not survive in Harbin. But we were just so excited being in Harbin! This city has gone viral on social media, and we wanted to check it out. Check out our first day in Harbin, China.

1. the guy didn't scamed you, the dish you pointed out on the menu was exactly they served, just that guy did not get the meaning of cabbage. 2. the hotel did not scam you, the disposable towl generally is offered in the express inn in China, and this is for people who didn't prepare their own towl or who don't wanna use the reusable towl for personal hygiene, but you have to pay for it. of course, the price will be higher than you buy it online. the disposable facial towl or shower towl are really popular in China, cuz it is easier to take for travellers since the material is lighter. if you don't wanna use it, you can just ask the reception offer you the normal towl. welcome to Harbin China.

28:27 it's not a scam. The english translation is bad, it's not cabbage. A lot of dishes have some kind of metaphor name to it rather than what it actually is (like "ants climbing the tree" or "buddha jumps the wall"). It's also not the sweetpotato dish some commentors are suggesting. It's very similar but this dish is made of fried egg with a caramel coating. It's sort of like the sweetpotato dish but it's not. And usually with these kind of dish (caramel coated dish). It's supposed to come out of the kitchen super hot with melted caramel. And you get a bowl of cold water with it. You are then supposed to pick up a piece and the melted caramel will create the spuer fine strands that looks like the one in the picture and you dip it into the cold water to cool the caramel and solidify it and not burn the inside of your mouth. But it only works for like 5 min after the dish is served to you since the caramel will otherwise cool off on it's on in the dish and you won't get the strand effect. It's kind of hard to make right to get that caramel strand effect and a lot of restaurants don't have skilled enough chefs to do it right. It might have been the case here.

you didn't get scammed, it is what you've ordered from the picture. It's Just that there's mistranslation from the English. It was a direct translation of the Chinese name, which the meaning can be wrong if it's not translated correctly. ้…ฅ้ป„่œ is a sweet potatoes dish.

that sweet popato you ordered is what you ordered, it is not scam, it is called Candied sweet potatoes, ๆ‹”ไธๅœฐ็“œ๏ผŒ it has strings , or thread like , becuase it is sugar, the picture on menu book is over presentation of those threads and only some places make that many threads, not most places, you can go to different resturuants and try order the same by showing picture to them, they come out the same dish

Guys, your video is awesome! My 11-year-old daughter started to crave going there! You are doing great! For your confusion about the dish, I think it is definitely a translation and a picture rendering effect problem. In Chinese, Cai means dish, in which any type of dish except rice, we would call it Cai in general, which you could count a meat dish as a Cai. However, if you directly translate it into English, Cai means vegetable ( I don't know why they made it into cabbage specifically, but it sounds like a general vegetable to me.) So, that dish's Chinese name "Su Huang Cai" doesn't literally mean cabbage. The picture shows the way that if you pick the pieces of sweet potatoes when it's hot and just done cooking, you could pull out long strings while you pick them because the sugary sweetness makes the sticky texture work that way when the temperature is very hot. So the picture on the menu shows you the string effects that could cover the whole dish. However, usually in winter, it is hard to make so stretchable strings and even impossible to make such long strings roll around the whole dish because the temperature is not hot enough to make the sticky coating work the way. It is not necessary for local people to have the exact same thing as the menu shows since they all know that. Another reason I could think of is the communication barrier. If you are non-local Chinese, I would definitely believe that the waiter would explain to you why the dish's look wouldn't be the same as the picture shows. As you can tell how many things I typed above, it's not a one-sentence explanation. Lastly, as a Chinese who travels a lot in China and overseas, disposable towels are not too rare for me, and it's not exclusive to China. But to be honest, I am not a fan of that either, but I usually bring my towels with me anywhere I go. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway, I should say thanks for pointing out the problems you guys met in China. There is always space for any people, place, and any country to improve!

Finally saw the video of Harbin, welcome you to my hometown again I'm glad you went to the right restaurant. Maomao's is a very good local restaurant. About the dish name "่€ๅผ้…ฅ้ป„่œ" -> "old style SU HUANG CAI" there is a mistranslation, which is a problem of machine translation. This is a dish fried with eggs and flour, The original meaning of this name is ้…ฅ=crisp, ้ป„=yellow, ่œ=a dish, but the word "่œ" is translated as cabbage here, so I'm sorry my friend, this is not a scam, but there is a translation error here that no one has discovered. Don't blame the waiter. He is just a working college student. He probably didn't realize that this menu would mislead customers before.

The dish is mistranslated on the menu. "้…ฅ้ป„่œ" was translated to "yellow cabbage" because "้ป„่œ" own their own is a kind of brown mustard. But this food is actually literally a soft (้…ฅ) yellow (้ป„) dish (่œ). It's also named Silk-pulling Eggs (ๆ‹”ไธ้ธก่›‹). The stringy thing is syrup. Usually, you have to pull them yourself.

Fun fact: The ice cubes are special ice โ€˜harvestedโ€™ from the local river โ€˜Song Hua Riverโ€™ that passes through the city. The main difference of the Harbin ice cubes from normal ice is that the Song Hua ice cubes are crystal clear. No โ€˜fogโ€™ inside. That way lights embedded inside ice cubes can be reflected perfectly.

The street where you live is the Central Street, built by the Russians back in 1898, there are lots of buildings from early 1900. It's ground cumin and peanuts on the sausage.. And it wasn't a scam, it was just a bad picture they chose at the restaurant... Disposable towels these days are very popular, better than those ones that are bleached and used by lots of people actually, it is a one use towel.

I am Chinese, welcome to China. If you encounter any difficulties, call 110 immediately and the police will help you. May you have warm winters, may you not be cold in spring, may you have lights when it gets dark, and may you have an umbrella when it rains, may you be accompanied by your beloved on the road, may all your happiness be without pretense.
