Islam came to Xi'An, China from the Muslim traders who did business along the silk road thousand of years ago. Their descendants are called the Hui people.
And today, there is a big Hui Muslim community in Xi'An.
We went to Muslim Street in Xi'an, China, lined with delicious Halal street food.
We also visited one of the oldest Mosque in China, the Xi'An Grand Mosque.
How are the Muslims treated in China? Are the Chinese Muslims happy?
Are the Chinese Muslims allowed to practice their religion freely?
Is Islam banned in China? Is religion banned in China?
What we saw was different than the stories we heard on western media.
Check out our vlog in China.

Hello, I am a Hui from the Chinese Muslim community. Thank you very much for making this documentary about the Hui people in China in an objective and true manner! What I want to express is that Chinese Muslims are indeed among the happiest Muslims in the world. We have a wise government and wise leaders. If you have any questions about China, please come to China and let us know!

The Chinese government does not care what religion everyone believes in. It only prohibits the use of religion to interfere in politics, which is to prevent the "politicization of religion."

Religions are not banned in China, and compared to Western countries, India, and South Korea, islamophobic in China is relatively lower. But in China, no ane are allowed to using any kind of religions to interfere state affair. But in other countries most politicians are using religions to dividing society and gain voters when the election come.

Two of the oldest working mosques in the world are in China. One is the Xi'an Grand Mosque you visited, the other one is in Guangzhou and is slightly older than the Xi'an one. The Guangzhou mosque was founded by an Arab merchant who was contemporary to the prophet Mohammad. This means as soon as Islam was founded, it already found its way to China and it also means the sea-born Silk Road was just as developed as the land route and probably safer. The architecture of the 2 mosques typically followed the design of any grand buildings of the time such as palaces or Buddhist temples. Mosques with onion domes and minarets arrived at China on later dates.

You can always find a halal restaurant in universities' cantinas in China. I've been to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, US, and some European countries. I've never seen the same.

China recognizes all the major religions in the world and you can see their temples, mosques, churches, monasteries and synagogue, if you choose to find them. But you are not allowed to evangelize your religion onto others. A person's religion is a private belief.

In ancient China, there were followers of Islam, and Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty was a Muslim who gained the trust of the Chinese emperor. I also want to tell everyone that many high-ranking officials in the Song Dynasty were Muslims, but China did not implement the integration of politics and religion. Therefore, the Chinese emperor often changed his religious beliefs, for example, he would have several religious leaders compete in spells to see who won and who believed. This also avoids religious wars. For example, in China, the Dragon King is the god in charge of rain. If the emperor requests rain, but the dragon king does not rain, the emperor orders the statue of the dragon king to be tied up and beaten. If God blesses China, the emperor will expand the temple for him. If God is not good to Chinese people, they will cause trouble in the Heavenly Palace and ask God for fairness. For example, the Chinese mythological novel "Journey to the West" tells such a story, so being a god in China is stressful. If the god does not bless, it will be difficult to preach in China.

There are about 35,000 mosques in China. These mosques are found in all provinces of China, with the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region having the most mosques, with about 24,000. Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Gansu Province are also areas with more mosques, with more than 4,000 and 2,500, respectively.China has 28m Muslims, while Saudi Arabia, with 32m, has just 20,000 mosques. This is the so-called Chinese ban on Muslims.

There are more mosques in China’s Xinjiang than in the US, UK, Germany and France combined. I haven’t counted those from the Ningxia Hui(Musilim)Autonomous Region😂😂

You two are really inspiring to me. You understand no Chinese, did very little research, don’t know what you are eating, ordered the wrong staff, yet I can clearly see you are having a good time. I should travel more and fear less.

It's great that you can integrate into Chinese life rather than being excluded from traveling. Looking at other bloggers who have come to China, they have always been carrying preconceived ideas and do not like to communicate with the local people. They often introduce the situation of China with prejudice, and have never tried to understand the actual situation with the local residents. There is no way to explore the real China without communication. You do an amazing job of communicating, even though you don't speak Mandarin.

Hello Steve and Ivana. Here are some answer to your quision in the vlog. At 5:14 - 7:38, it is called mirror cake with ross paste (玫瑰镜糕), originated in Xian. It is made from glutinous rice flour and uses different kinds of rice and techniques from mochi. The paste is a ross paste; I'm unsure if it contains any lotus. This particular rice cake street food has some history. Its shape is quite like the round bronze mirror used by the ancient Chinese, called a mirror cake. At 7:39 -12:01, the meat pie is called Samsa (烤包子, which means baked bun in Chinese). It originated in central Asia and is filled with meat and vegetables, often onion and beef/mutton. Also, with the correct ratio of water and flour, the dough will be sticky to stick to the side of the oven. About "Critical Grenade", a clueless, probably silly translation. At 14:03 - 18:25, the bread in soup is Paomo (泡馍), which originated in Shaanxi. It is made of lamb/beef soup and unleavened flatbread (which is why the bread is so dense). Shaanxi people like to shred the flatbread by themself since they can shred the piece as small as they want. The glass noodles are not made from rice starch but green bean/sweet potato starch. At 18:26 - 19:21, the pickled garlic (糖醋蒜) is made with sugar and rice vinegar. It could be eaten alone as a snack or as a side dish with other food.

I am a Xi'anese who studied in the US. This area is on the older side also because the government doesn't intervene in the lives of minorities. The government used to want to demolish and renovate the area, but because the Muslims didn't agree with it, they didn't intervene anymore. There are more than 56 ethnic minorities in China and all of them have a lot of favorable policies. For example, they get extra points on the college entrance exam (similar to the SAT in the US). Because there are still many ethnic minorities living in areas that are not well developed in terms of education and life, the government gives them preferential treatment. There is a Muslim girl that I knew from this street in my high school, her family sells marinated beef on the street and that alone pays for her schooling in the US. They makes a lot money actually.
