i didn't understand the lyrics of this song for a long time, but i do finally see what they can be about they describe a relationship with a narcissist, like many other songs on the album such as 'hypocrates' and 'starring role' stars in this song represent 2 things: they impersonate Marina herself, while also having a more literal meaning of something that brings light to somebody else's life, brings them comfort, good mood, appreciation, attention and many other benefits. Marina is the star that someone 'bought' (great word choice here by the way) to cheer themselves up, because their life is pretty dark (depressive, miserable), and they basically batten on her kindness the line "you named it after me, but i'm not yours to keep, because you'll never see, that the stars are free" shows that the narcissist doesn't realise at all that Marina is an independent person with her own perspective, who is helping them of her free will. her emotions in the relationship are constantly ignored, to the point that the narcissist believes that their relationship is still positive, probably because they still get what they want. they doesn't even try to notice how Marina feels and when she tries to show that, the relationship turns into hell ("oh we don't own our heavens now, we only own our hell, and if you don't know that by now, then you don't know me that well"). they absolutely don't know her because they don't even try too that person wouldn't change "it's just who you are", they don't want change, they're just like this and moreover they sit in their darkness from their own will "and in your man-made dark, the light inside you died", constantly making themselves feel worse, playing victim and craving for the attention to feel better. they don't realise they're using their partner, in fact, they're with someone just to feel better, not because they appreciate her as a person but the nature of the stars is what it is. no matter how much money and persuasion skills you have, you can start to claim in front of everyone that you now own the alpha centauri, but in reality that star will always belong to the universe, to the cosmos. and so will marina with her light "and no matter how hard you try i'll always belong in the sky" yes, i've been through some shit lol
