I have been FASCINATED by Chino Moreno's vocals, thanks mostly to the only two songs I've heard so far in the Deftones catalogue. Your next popular suggestion being "Be Quiet And Drive" harkens to themes of escapism, freedom and longing for a place far away from the challenges of life - something I think we all long for occasionally. I am ready for this deep introspection!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Deftones performing "Be Quiet and Drive" for the first time.

"Tormented angel" is just about the most perfect description of Chino's voice I've ever heard

Deftones has such an atmosphere around them that you just fall into the music, it's very gripping.

How they recorded vocals for this album really made Chino shine. They basically put Chino in a room with a couple monitors for bleed, put his microphone through a limiter, turned the gain all the way up and recorded his parts to tape, which were later assembled digitally. This basically caused his vocal track to be very compressed and saturated, which works wonders for Chino's style as it's all about encompassing two extremes; very quiet and very loud. Every nuance of his quiet vocals are captured and all the rawness of his harsher deliveries are all the more accentuated, while somewhat being level with one another in terms of dynamics to not feel jarring. This song and My Own Summer are probably the best examples of this.

I worked as a music producer/engineer around the time this came out and worked with a slew of bands that either started playing together because of this song or changed their entire sound because of it. This particular song literally launched a thousand bands. And those blood curdling high scream/shrieks are indeed vocals, he does them on the occassional track and even does them live. One of the greatest rock vocalists and frontmen of all-time, imo.

Deftones are such a special band. The album “White Pony” is an absolute masterpiece front to back.

God, 30 secs into the intro and I'm INSTANTLY transported back to being 18 yrs old again and hearing this song on the radio. Every time! Such good memories!

I like her facial articulation and interpretation of the song. This is the actual song you should use to introduce anyone to Deftones

It's criminal how much I've slept on this band. I really need to put them in my regular rotation.

I would love to see Knife Prty,it is so incredibly complex from a vocal standpoint (Not just Chino Moreno's vocals but also Rodleen Getsic's incredible performance) it would be so exciting to see it covered here!

one of the best rock songs of all time. Everything Chino touches is just gold, man. I recommend anyone to check out his side projects, Crosses and Team Sleep.

This is the song that started my entire love for Deftones and I have been hooked ever since. I was blown away as a kid when I first heard this song and to this day, Deftones are one of my favorite bands since the '90s. Also, Chino Moreno's voice is haunting. The stuff he comes up with lyrically is amazing, even when I have no idea what the song is about.

This has been my favorite song for 20 years... every time I hear it, I just get this vibe of relaxation I haven't been able to get from any other song.

R.I.P. Chi Cheng. (Bass player) Deftones go hard af too! Chino has one of the best screams in the game. This song is super chill compared to how heavy they can get with songs like Bloody Cape and RATS! RATS! RATS! They’re very versatile when it comes to being soft and melodic, and switching it up to pig squealing screams and heavy guitar riffs. Deftones are amazing. Additional: Chino has undergone reconstructive throat surgery from blowing out his vocal chords!!! He’s still working to this day! The champ has still got it. 💪🏽 “Invisible Hands,” by Crosses (Chino’s side group) came out about a month ago. Check it out! It’s cool.

One thing I haven't heard you talk a lot about is Chino's note choice. He's rarely singing chord tones (root, 3rd, 5th). For example, this vocal melody starts on the 2nd/9th, I believe. What this does is create a feeling of tension that he only releases briefly and occasionally. But it goes beyond that. He also plays with moments of extreme dissonance, not just singing upper extensions like the 9th/11th/13th, but notes from completely different keys. He'll even sing microtones. Because of the level of control he has, we somehow register it as not simply "out of tune." He bends into or out of a pitch at the end of a note. For me, these note choices define the Deftones sound. It's beauty contrasted with dissonance. The beauty comes from Chino's soft delivery and the wall of fuzzed-out guitar playing dense note clusters. The dissonance comes from the note choices.

QUICK REMINDER: isn’t it absolutely insane that Chino did not ever take any vocal lessons until white pony, isn’t it insane how talented his natural voice is?

I love Chino’s vocals in “Hexagram”. It’s a solid piece that shows his versatility. Also, his performances with his side project Crosses are interesting.

Chino is a great example of how a voice and abilities change with age. I'm a good way in my opinion. They have been around for so long and have a good catalog of music. They are a band that I discovered very early in their career when I was in my 20s. Now I'm almost 50. Still love them.
