How they recorded vocals for this album really made Chino shine. They basically put Chino in a room with a couple monitors for bleed, put his microphone through a limiter, turned the gain all the way up and recorded his parts to tape, which were later assembled digitally. This basically caused his vocal track to be very compressed and saturated, which works wonders for Chino's style as it's all about encompassing two extremes; very quiet and very loud. Every nuance of his quiet vocals are captured and all the rawness of his harsher deliveries are all the more accentuated, while somewhat being level with one another in terms of dynamics to not feel jarring. This song and My Own Summer are probably the best examples of this.

I worked as a music producer/engineer around the time this came out and worked with a slew of bands that either started playing together because of this song or changed their entire sound because of it. This particular song literally launched a thousand bands. And those blood curdling high scream/shrieks are indeed vocals, he does them on the occassional track and even does them live. One of the greatest rock vocalists and frontmen of all-time, imo.

This is the song that started my entire love for Deftones and I have been hooked ever since. I was blown away as a kid when I first heard this song and to this day, Deftones are one of my favorite bands since the '90s.
Also, Chino Moreno's voice is haunting. The stuff he comes up with lyrically is amazing, even when I have no idea what the song is about.

Deftones go hard af too!
Chino has one of the best screams in the game. This song is super chill compared to how heavy they can get with songs like Bloody Cape and RATS! RATS! RATS!
Theyâre very versatile when it comes to being soft and melodic, and switching it up to pig squealing screams and heavy guitar riffs.
Deftones are amazing.
Additional: Chino has undergone reconstructive throat surgery from blowing out his vocal chords!!! Heâs still working to this day! The champ has still got it. đŞđ˝
âInvisible Hands,â by Crosses (Chinoâs side group) came out about a month ago.
Check it out! Itâs cool.

One thing I haven't heard you talk a lot about is Chino's note choice. He's rarely singing chord tones (root, 3rd, 5th). For example, this vocal melody starts on the 2nd/9th, I believe. What this does is create a feeling of tension that he only releases briefly and occasionally. But it goes beyond that. He also plays with moments of extreme dissonance, not just singing upper extensions like the 9th/11th/13th, but notes from completely different keys. He'll even sing microtones. Because of the level of control he has, we somehow register it as not simply "out of tune." He bends into or out of a pitch at the end of a note.
For me, these note choices define the Deftones sound. It's beauty contrasted with dissonance. The beauty comes from Chino's soft delivery and the wall of fuzzed-out guitar playing dense note clusters. The dissonance comes from the note choices.

"Tormented angel" is just about the most perfect description of Chino's voice I've ever heard
