Weezer is a band with a sprawling complex history. From the Blue album, to Pinkerton, to the Green album, to Maladroit, to Make Believe, to the Red album, to Raditude, to Hurley, to Everything Will Be Alright in the End, to the White album, to Pacific Daydream, to the Teal album, to the Black album, to OK Human, to Van Weezer, to SZNZ. With lots of Weezer cruises, and TV pilots in-between. Basically, there's a lot of ground to cover. But I've never discussed Weezer's origins in depth. So i'm doing that now.

Iâm pretty sure Rivers debunked that he had asthma a long time ago. His dad called him Weezer because of the Little Rascals character, because he was âthe cool one.â
And the biggest influence on Rivers when he first started writing was The Velvet Underground. Nirvanaâs âSliverâ inspired the nerdy nostalgia of those songs, and Sebadoh inspired the earnestness.

I met these guys. Was in a recording studio in Kennsington Market, recording a piece on lap steel. The owner of the studio had found me busking and invited me to come down and record. In return i made him a logo for his biz. So it was the hottest most humid day, the air conditioning wasnât working so there was sweat running off of my face and dripping down onto the guitar, like a river. So these two guys from Weezer walked in for some reason and we had a short chat. They said they liked my sound. I said it would sound better if i was not underwater or something to that effect. I had no idea who they even were at the time and didnât know for years who weezer where. They were called Weezer at the time; they had a rehearsal space exactly in the building on Queenâs Quay where my ex girlfriend, Alice, was putting on fashion shows and such and there were big parties there. That part, about Alice is rather a long strange story. She was too beautiuful for her own good and literally every guy wanted her. AnywayâŚcarry on, thx for making this video :)

I had no idea it was a Sloan show that gave Weezer a bit of A&R profile. My first and only Weezer show featured Sloan as the opener. They definitely complement each other.

Awesome video. I saw their tour with the Pixies a couple years ago and heard how Rivers talked about his admiration for them.

I remember Zoom, lol. They would be flying around Sunset Strip on their skates, peppering the cars and poles with their flyers, and they wore these Dana Strum hairstyle wigs, and just towels on. The band wasnt bad, yet not great, Rivers was like a cross between KK Downing (his hero)of Judas Priest and Paul Gilbert on guitar. Great times in 89.
