This is a shot taken around May 25 or 28, 1944 at the Westrnbork transit camp, Holland.
The convoy depicted transported 297 people to Birkenau where it reached the camp on 31 May 1944.
The girl with the handkerchief looking out of the train was called Settela Steinbach, and for a long time she was known only by the name of "the gypsy with the handkerchief", one of the symbolic faces of the Shoah. Few days after being filmed in this video, 285 people from that convoy were gone. Settela was sent to Gipsy Camp of Birkenau, and the to the gas chambers on 2 or 3 august 1944 with other 3000 Birkenau gipsy prisioners. Four months later another convoy left Westerbork with another symbol of the Shoah, Anne Frank, on board.
Of the 297 people who arrived in Birkenau with the convoy in this video, only four survived.

I'm always frozen by this video clip, thinking about the terror they would meet. My father was in one of those cattle cars en route to Treblinka. He said there was a Polish soldier who had a knife and worked to whittle away at the lock until the door could be opened. The door was opened. My father and his brother jumped off that moving train. They were shot at by the Nazis guarding the train. My father's brother died in my father's arms. My father survived by hiding in the woods for 19 months, moving from place to place. He passed away on May 20, 1992. Rest in peace.
