"Shortly before the article (Obama's General, Rolling Stones, 2009, NDA), I carried out an inspection in the Kandahar sector. The Taliban had retreated about 15 miles outside the city, and close to the Pakistani border, but overall the region did not appear to be under our control. In order to be sure that our rear was safe in view of a new offensive, I sent Deforrest (Maj.General Michael P. Defforest, chief intelligence, N.D.A) to inspect the northern sector where the Italian army was located. Deforrest wrote in his report that the rear was more than safe, (...) it was under control. Although guerrilla activities still occurred sporadically there was nothing that could really worry us. The Italians had achieved with just over 3000 men what we had not been able to achieve with 30,000". (General S.McChrystal, Afghanistan under the Obama's Administration, 2017).
