Had a hairstylist who did all my color services and silk pressed. Using heat protectant, I would get my hair pressed professionally almost once a month with NO heat damage. Saw a beautician for a hairstyle (sleek ponytail) who used oil sheen before I could say anything and am now growing out heat damage. It doesn’t matter at what stage (most of us naturals blow dry before straightening anyway) —- oil shouldn’t be used on the strands. I’m still not sure we should use it at all but that’s not what I’m here to say. Find a heat protectant you LIKE, but one that’s labeled to prevent heat damage.

All heat protectants manufactured is mainly alcohol and oil. Ive always used oil as a heat protectant, only enough to coat my hands, and took my time blow drying on low. Truly a very small amount goes alooooong way, you do not need much, maybe a quarter size. Never had any issues. Also if you use just a nice size amount, your hair will still flow lovely, and not be stiff at all. I think the only time you have a issue with your hair frying is when you use a bunch of oil.

Oil for blow drying? I guess is a good way to keep the hair from drying (crispy) out totally like a hot oil treatment (because it seems heat help hair absorb the oils), but if anyone is going to go the extra step of flat ironing it would probably be good to actually invest in a heat protectant product.

A good heat protectant provides more than heat protection though. Humidity protection, a nice silky coat on the hair (blow dried hair is already dryer so it's prone to tangling), and it's usually weightless in comparison to an oil.
