A common thought is that women go to the gym and just do cardio. I can completely understand why some women may just spend their gym time on the treadmill, bike, stepper or another type of cardio machine.
For beginners, the gym can seem like a busy and daunting place. Machines can look intimidating and people could be put off by the free weights section when others look confident using dumbbells/barbells.
I promise you that these gym anxieties are completely normal but you hold the power and ability to change that π
Whilst it's great to keep on top of your cardiovascular fitness, it's incredibly beneficial for you to add weight and resistance training to your gym routine. I can honestly say that since I've done strength training, I feel so empowered, can lift and move things I never would have been able to before!
Here's 3 tips to help you feel more confident in adding weight training to your gym routine and remember, EVERYONE has to start somewhere π:
1β¨: the next time you're in the gym, have a little snoop around the machines π a lot of them will have stickers on them which show you how to set them up whilst highlighting the muscles that they engage. If you don't fancy staring at a sticker for what may seem like an eternity, take note of the machine names then go home and research them. Google and YouTube are your best friends here π
2β¨: see if your gym offers a free plan for a number of weeks. My gym offers a 6 week program where a member of the gym team will ask what your fitness goals are whilst showing you how to use machines. They then create a plan, highlighting when you should increase your weight and by how much. This plan really set me up in my weight training journey and helpedme become way more confident.
3β¨: If you spot people in the free weights area doing exercises that engage certain muscles such as shoulders, go home and search for shoulder exercises. Shameless plug here, I've got a few YouTube videos that will give you some weight training moves - checkout my channel to view them
Let me know in the comments if you've ever experienced these feelings and how did you overcome them?
