I had a very special encounter with a juvenile black bear on the Appalachian Trail outside of Pearisburg Virginia in July of 2022. Black bears are generally not dangerous and are very majestic creatures. This one was a healthy juvenile by the look of it and had probably just left the protection of its mother which usually happens after 16-18 months. This black bear was likely foraging and this was actually the second time I had encountered it.
