The most incredible things about Eve Online is that it was largely built on Stackless Python, and in it's early days, it had to get permission from the government because they were implementing "super fast ssd's" in their server architecture.

Idk how well it’s doing overall player count wise but Star Wars the Old Republic MMO is still a really fun game imho and it was one of the games I heard the “it will be a wow killer!” claim about when it first came out.

I've been playing WoW since 2004, the amount of games in the early years that people ranted about being the "WoW killer" and all of them within a year or two was closed or pay to play!

That's how I feel about everquest man. To this day it doesn't try to he anything other than its own thing for the past 20 years I've been playing it.

The "dead" mmo I still play had its servers shut down in 2012.
I played as recently as last week, with strangers. The Discord has 13k members but I don't know how many are active in game at any one time. Server stats show 73 people online right now.

I think this happens to most "killers" that get that rep in the press have either flopped hard, or been aggressively average. Very few have even come close to competing with the game they're supposed to be dethroning, let alone killing.
