In business, there is a technique, that when used for good, is very effective: the sandwich. Positive/negative/positive. Example: "You are leading in productivity. That's great. However, you are also leading in high error rate. (Insert suggestion). We appreciate your hard work, and dedication. You are doing an outstanding job."
What is happening is of course, the "buns" of positivity are true, so you are encouraged to eat this sandwich, even though the "meat" is nasty. People eat this type of sandwich 99% of the time. So...
With evil intention this works too. If you have a coworker who blabs to the boss all the time, might say about you: "Oh yeah, Jim is a great employee. Great guy, awesome. But (say in a hush tone), he comes in late sometimes too. (Back to normal tone). But, great guy, great guy...awesome worker"
Unfortunately, if your boss doesn't know this technique, he's encouraged by this guys "honesty", and he's going to eat the entire sandwich, because you are a great guy. But, he just ate some poison meat about you.
Intention matters. If backstabbers know this technique, they can get away with anything, while being praised by your boss as a truth teller, because we all have a good and bad side, right?
Be careful. Use it for good: "Honey, dinner was awesome! The spinach was salty, but omg, the steak was 5 stars. Thanks for making it!"

Reminded me of Djokovic. Whenever the crowd cheered for the other player, he heard his name being called.
