How the British Military Was Outsmarted By A Bunch Of Farmers - How Money Works #shorts

This is how British Military Leadership was outsmarted by a bunch of farmers.

In 2002 British officials in Afghanistan wanted to get rid of poppy plantations that were eventually being used to make drugs that would show up back in the west.

They offered Afghan poppy farmers $700 an acre in return for destroying their poppy crops in the hope of getting rid of the very start of the supply chain.

The only problem with this plan was that it ignited a poppy-growing frenzy among Afghan farmers who sought to plant as many poppies as they could in order to collect pay-outs from the cash-for-poppies program.

Some farmers even harvested the sap before destroying the plants, getting paid twice for the same crop.

British military: "We'll offer you $700 an acre for destroying your poppy crops." Afghan farmers: "So you mean harvesting them? Sweet deal!"

Same thing happened in India with Cobras. A bounty was put on Cobras as a solution to their growing population. Farmers started to farm cobras instead of hunting them. Once gov stopped offering a reward farmers released the cobras which made the problem worse than it was originally.

Britain in the 1830's: let's make large amounts of opium exports and sell it to china. Britain in 2022: switch teams

You're gotta ask yourself, how do you make the exactly the same mistake twice? The answer, I think, is that somebody really wanted to spend someone other's money and show that they "were doing something" about the problem.

That is what happens when you have politicians and bureaucrats running a military operation.

Someone in the UK didn’t pay attention in history class the day they talked about the Cobra Bounty in India AKA The Cobra Effect.
