Iâll just use my I-beam level as my marker

I wouldnât do this in a tournament or anything but I often just set my putter head right behind the ball, clean my ball and line it up, good to go, no mark necessary. Idk if itâs legal or not, when the round matter obviously I just use a coin or something.

I've lost count the amount times i've had this discussion on the course. Everytime an old mate sees my poker chip marker and confidently tells me "the rules say it has to be small" we have the same conversation.

The point of a ball marker is so your opponent doesnât hit your ball with theirs, so how would using a phone or a hat work? You would need a coin or and actual marker so the ball path doesnât get disrupted

I mean, mathematically speaking, once a ball is removed you can never put it back in its original exact place with infinite precision.

Just be aware of Rule 10.2b(2) which prohibits setting down an object on or off the green to show the line of play. Also the definition of alignment device in Rule 6.7 of the Equipment Rules. Using the usual small ball marker doesnât risk breaching Rule 10.2b(2), but using a large object may.
