New golf rules in 2023 mean a change to the back-on-the-line relief procedure. Back on the line is a procedure you can use when taking relief from a Penalty Area (red or yellow) or Unplayable Ball.

Jay!!!! Great name brother!
So with this new line rule. You can bring it back to the fairway as Long as it is on the correct line? But say that part of the fairway is in crap shape you can bring it behind that area? Just not any closer to the hole?
Keep up the grind brother!!

Is the "line" defined by path of the ball (e.g., a big hook, which in this case could have entered the hazard flying nearly sideways), or by a straight line from the point at which the ball was hit to the point where it landed?

Hi,

I had a situation where my ball was deep in the bushes, I chose to take a penalty drop, could I go back as far as I want in line with the flag and only take a one stroke penalty? It wasn’t a red stake area but I found the ball.

Thanks

What is the difference between this and what the rule has been?

Can u drop on a cart path on the line that is going downhill?? Then when it stops take relief from cart path. Some cart paths could roll 30 yards.

You can drop at shoulder height again now as well

That's nice to know. Now I can make better drops inside preferred distances or locations this year.

Can you drop back on line in the hazard? I ask because I understand if you attempt to play out of a hazard and the ball doesn’t leave the hazard but becomes unplayable after the stroke that one possibility is dropping within one club length where the shot was played or dropping at reference point. If this is correct, why couldn’t you drop on line in a hazard? Thanks!

Does this rule still count as an extra stroke?

You can change the lie conditions too? So I can bring it back on the line into the fairway rather than drop in the rough where my ball crossed into the hazard?? That doesn’t seem right

So explain why there is relief from a embedded ball in the rough but in a bunker
Also why no relief from a ball in a divot

@rogerdixon1069

So is the line determined from where the ball begins to cross the hazard, or where it actually lands in the hazard.

I ask because I can hit some wicked slices into a lake.

That is a tour swing!
