“Make sure you take care of you because no one can take care of you better than you.” -Grandma Thelma

Those words were spoken to me by my grandma after every phone call or visit. I am so grateful she gifted me these words. I might not have always understood exactly what she meant or my understanding may have morphed over time due to life situations but today I am honored to share with you and allow for you to interpret how it best fits for you!

When she used to tell me this I would always say “I am grandma”. And in those moments I WAS taking care of myself - eating food, drinking water, sleeping, working, exercising…of course I was taking care of myself!

As time has passed and more life happens, we face challenges and experience joy I can clearly see that for me taking care of myself means showing up for myself everyday even when I don’t want to or I’m tired. Doing the things that nourish my heart - for me that is waking up early to write, meditate and read. Understanding my mental state and learning to disarm the stories. Taking time to get to know my nervous system, inviting the emotions in, learning sit with them and how to breathe through the experience. This is now how I take care of myself.

And yes we can share our love language, boundaries and how we desire to be loved by significant others, friends and loved ones but NO ONE is responsible for us and what we experience internally. The more self examination and looking inward the more we can understand ourselves and how to better take care because no one can take care of you better than YOU ❤️
