Understanding the roles sections play in a song helps to:
-figure out where lyrical ideas fit
-create good thematic progression
-tackle songs as a whole; once a musical pattern is established, that sets you up for however that section reoccurs!
Once you've written one verse and a chorus, you've actually written WAY more than half the song. The chorus will either be the same or tweaked in minor ways throughout, and the verses will at least follow the same rough musical pattern of the first one written.
