Rowing with the straps off is the single best piece of advice I ever received from a rowing coach. It did a huge amount to fix my form: I stopped pulling the handle so high on the drive that I would sometimes have it touch my chin, and the fact my rower stopped gradually slipping over the course of several sessions also indicated that it helped me channel all of my energy into the push part of the drive instead of into the straps that were keeping me from falling off.
