The pilot will immediately put the aircraft into a sharp dive to get down to a thicker atmosphere. A lot of people are frightened about this alone but it's a life saving measure, you'd better hope he does this.

15 minutes? You only need it for 1-2.

If it takes more than that for the pilots to descend (START descending...) to a safer altitude you have bigger issues.

Everytime I see one of those the only thing I think of is "FIGHT CLUB"

You forgot to list the greatest benefit of those masks, which is that they make you look like a duck.

Levity is necessary in that situation to lighten the mood, thus lightening the aircraft and increasing the overall odds of survival.

We were told in Flight Attendant Training that it was no more than 15 minutes. That’s why the words: Sweep the nearest mask to your face, sit down and hold on. Despite hundreds of flights and over 15 million miles in the air, the first thing I do after being seated is pull out the safety card and find my nearest exit and O2

Is it true that there are sedation medications in the gas? To help calm everyone down?

Really?? They showed a note that an airliner can fly up to flight level 450, or 45,000 feet !! Please tell me what type of aircraft, other than military, can operate at that altitude without worrying about "corelock" !!

15 minute is more then enough for descending to safe altitude which is below 10000 feet. Soo no worries But its going to be a steep descent.

The oxygen comes from a chemical reaction canister that activated after you pull the lanyard and produces oxygen for 10 minutes until depleted. If you just put the mask on without pulling the lanyard, you're just rebreathing your own exhaled air into the plastic bag.
