CloudTrail enables auditing, security monitoring, and operational troubleshooting by tracking user activity and API usage. CloudTrail logs, monitors, and retains account activity related to user actions across AWS infrastructure, giving you control over storage, analysis, and remediation actions.

CloudTrail is active in your AWS account when you create it and doesn't require any manual setup. When activity occurs in your AWS account, that activity is recorded in a CloudTrail event.

Amazon CloudWatch collects and visualizes real-time logs, metrics, and event data in automated dashboards to streamline your infrastructure and application maintenance. Cloud watch visualize performance data, create alarms, and correlate data to resolve performance issues. Cloud watch gives you all performance and operational data in the form of logs and metrics as single source of truth instead of collecting it from different sources.

Here are the differences between CloudTrail & CloudWatch.
1. CloudWatch is a monitoring service for AWS resources and applications. CloudTrail is a web service that records API activity in your AWS account.
2. CloudWatch monitors applications and infrastructure performance in the AWS environment. CloudTrail monitors actions in the AWS environment.
3. With CloudWatch, we can track & collect metric, monitor logs & visualize health of resources. CloudTrail answers these questions - Who made a request? Which services were used? What actions were performed?
4. CloudWatch delivers metrics data in 5-minute or 1-minute periods for essential monitoring and detailed monitoring, respectively. CloudTrail delivers an event within 15 minutes of the API call.
5. CloudWatch focuses on the activity of AWS services and resources. CloudTrail is a log of all actions that have taken place inside your AWS environment.
6. You can configure CloudTrail with CloudWatch Logs to monitor your trail logs and be notified when specific activity occurs. Configure your trail to send log events to CloudWatch Logs. Define CloudWatch Logs metric filters to evaluate log events for matches in terms, phrases, or values.
7. Usage - AWS CloudWatch can monitor bandwidth utilization, performance, and the traffic parameters of your app. If someone has deleted a service, You can identify the culprit with the help of historical CloudTrail data Logs.
