Our closest neighboring galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light years away. That’s far far away. But still in the same universe. The fact that the opening line addresses viewers from earths perspective indicates that Earth is canonically within the Star Wars universe. Just not the same galaxy. Or time period.
