You claimed to never have seen the breeze storage done before but the design is practically the same as Ray's Works. He used it to launch arrows at super speed to kill mobs rather than for travel, but the concept is the exact same.

Elytra fall damage is really weird, because it doesn’t take speed into account at all. It takes the place that you started descending from and calculated fall damage as if you weren’t flying. The only way to prevent fall damage with an elytra is by looking upwards at least 40 degrees. So even though Myles was going slowly downwards, he didn’t look up enough to cancel the fall damage
