Definitely hard disagree with a caveat.
You need to be tactical with your Casts since it's fine to hard reference one way, but when you're creating webs of references that's when memory goes through the roof needlessly.
There are times when you absolutely want to hard reference because you actually want the asset loaded at all times... Although it's generally a better idea to just reference as a variable instead of using Casts. I only use Casts when I need to reference something as a basic Object in the majority of use cases or when I Cast to the same object class as what I'm working on (keeps hard references down while letting you get away with dirty dev).
