Ophelia is an 1851-52 painting by British artist John Everett Millais. It depicts Ophelia, a character from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, singing before she drowns in a river.

If you dont know the lore behind the painting:

There is a stroy made by Shakespeare called hamlet

Hamlet is the prince of denmark, with the kingdom now being ruled by his uncle claudius who took ofer hamlets dad( aka claudius brother) . Rumors spread around the kingdom saying he got bitten by a snake. One night, guards take a look over the castle until they see something strange. It is the old kings spirit! Shocked, they go to tell hamlet. When hamlet sees his old dad, the old kings spirit ( i forgot his name) told him to take revenge. With the new information hamlet received, he goes to make a play on how his dad died. The play explains that claudius killed his brother. The old king was sleeping in the garden and claudius added poison into his ear. With everyone flabbergasted, claudius gets exposed, leaving him mad and doesnt know what to do. A few days go past, and hamlet goes to tell queen gertrude ( his mum) to have a conversation inside her room with him . When claudius saw, he told his main assistant to go and spy on them to see what they were saying. Hamlet started picking at his mum, saying that she went over board, marrying claudius after his dad died and Saying his dad must have some more respect. When they are arguing, hamlet hears the curtain moving. He thought it was a rat so he stabbed the curtain. Little did he know it was the assistant, falling dead onto the floor. Ophelia , the girl in the painting tries to find flowers for her father and a little gift, not knowing he died. The couriers of the castle tell her the news. ( i forgot to add this, claudius sent hamlet on a little trip to get him away.) With the death or her dad and the disappearance of hamlet, the courtiers find her in the pond, drowned as she was singing under a depression and tripped into the pond. ( it doesnt say she slipped into the pond in the book, but thats just how the story goes. Others think someone pushed her.) as hamlet arrives into the castle, the courtiers tell him the story. As they are telling him, ophelias brother, lateres, aappears, saying he failed to protect her.

Days go by, and lateres challenges hamlet to a duel, which was recommended my claudius. Since her sisters death, he wanted to take revenge by adding poison onto his sword, so if hamlet gets cut, he would die and the poison seeps into his skin.

DUEL: after they are fighting , the first round no one got injured. Claudius served hamlet a drink, which had poison inside . With hamlet denying, queen gerturude just snatched it off claudius, drinking it. After the second duel hamlet gets cut. The third round, they both accidently swapped their swords. With latres getting cut.

Suddently, the queen drops to the floor , speculating that claudius poisoned her. With all his might, hamlet got so angry he rsn up to claudius and stabbed him. So thst leaves queen gertrude, claudius, hamlet, lateres, and ophelia all dying one by one.

Please like this it took forever :(

this painting is absolutely beautiful but for some reason it always makes me feel sad. she’s still glowing with life, and yet i’m watching her last moments and it feels so helpless.
