Soups are nourishing, whether one has teeth or not. Soups satisfy a "lowest common denominaror" solution.

Stew is one of man's best inventions. It breaks down tough meats, it retains nutrients in the broth, kills bacteria and parasites through boiling, and is a communal activity which builds camaraderie.

Guarantee that the officers didn't think it was wasteful cooking for themselves

So that's where all the squirrels, deer, and rabbits went.

Sounds like a logical way of keeping the men nourished, get their vitamins and protein plus feeling the relief of warmth in your body during the cold days.

Soups and stews are the greatest “survival/ nutritional” format. And in the even that bread was able to be rationed out, it’s even better.

No wonder Napoleon sought to improve battlefield cuisine by introducing canning and mayonnaise

To be fair, stews and soups are by far the most nutritionally efficient way to cook. Unlike frying, where you have to discard the oil, with a soup you consume all the materials involved in the cooking process

The soup or stew has all or most of the nutrition you need for people on the move

Here in Brazil in "modern days" truck drivers who travel giant distances carrying goodies suffered from the same problem, one burner, one pot, they came up with a dish that we call "Arroz de carreteiro" or in English, "trucker's rice" and now it is a typical dish admired and loved by the whole country

Water is readily available and doesnt need supply lines. Frying requires oil and to keep enough to cook for a year or more would be extreamly wastful. Also cant really F it up and burn it so no wasting food. Plus this works as an addition way to keep troops hydrated.

Little did they know that making soups and stews killed all the bacteria and other critters that would kill you at that time.

imagine having to fight a war in a time where guns exist but proper medicine doesn't and they hand you a stew pot for ever meal including your last.

In our dormitory, one girl had an old canister-type electric popcorn popper. We made a HUGE variety of foods in it, from beef stroganoff to omelets.

Everybody talks about the wars but nobody tells the story of a common person on the battlefield. Thank you for the info
