I dated a woman whose worst version was awful. She was unbelievably nice to start. It took a few months for her true colors to show. When they did I promptly left. No one deserves to be treated that way.

You described my recently deceased wife, Nancy; her name means 'gracious one' and she lived up to it. She gave me 10 beautiful children; delivering 7 without any anaesthesia because she wanted to be alert to meet her new baby. She was always amazed hearing the other women in the maternity wing screaming at their husbands. When people would meet her, then, later tell me how much they adored her (and I still hear it to this day), I was and am always quick to tell them, "You know the lady you just met? That's the same woman I live(d) with every single day. The most genuine, kind, funny, hospitable, generous and gracious human I've ever known. So you see why I love(d) her so much?"
She was the real deal. You would've loved her, dear Reader. After 38 years of marriage, I was still the proudest man just to be seen with her. When she was in the hospital dying, the nurses would come to me and ask, "If she's this sweet and kind when she's feeling so miserable, what is she like when she feels good?!" I would always respond, "I know, there just aren't enough words."
It's only thru the grace of Jesus Christ that I find strength and purpose to live without her.

When my wife uses the phrase “you’ve tried to leave me numerous times.”
I would ask her “If you were me and you were having to deal with how you act towards me would you stick around with a person like that?”
She’d usually back down rather quickly because she knew that what she was doing was not something someone should stick around for. Now that she’s put in the effort required for change she hasn’t had to say her famous quote in some time now.

Any person who thinks their partner doesn't deserve better (and could get it) is either a (1) narcissist, (2) they're sleeping on the job and will find out or (3) they're right because they settled so hard that they resent their partner for it. If you've got a partner that does deserve better, then be better or someone else will.
