Recently I’ve seen a trend in making “bad art” or making “ugly art”, and I’ve been really drawn to it.

The issue with exclusively making digital art is that I’ve gotten too used to being able fix my mistakes. I can undo that misplaced stroke, or completely restart coloring if I don’t like the palette I chose.

I was a bit of a perfectionist before, and digital art has completely ruined my ability to play. Every time I try to to get back into traditional media, I runaway because I’m scared that it won’t be good.

Which brings me back to making bad art. This trend finally gave me the courage to pick up my sketchbook.

I made a goal to create more than I consume in 2025, and utilizing a sketchbook can help with that. If I go into it knowing that I’m not going to make something beautiful, it takes some of the pressure off. The best way to create a regular sketchbooking habit is to just start, with zero expectations. Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself.
