There are some guys like this in the states, where they're constantly up their moms butt and its okay to love your mom but ... its so weird to check with her on things that have nothing to do with her. We're family, but we're adults we don't need htem telling us how to best live our life or to give unasked for advice.

It's case by case, especially if it's a mixed setting of 2 cultures. As long as both sides are open-minded and willing to understand each other and compromise, then I don't see the problem. It also boils down to your partner supporting and acting as a team with you.
However, if the in-laws are very controlling and narrow-minded and the man is not supporting me, then out of respect for myself and my happiness, I'd have to leave. Imagine if we had children. I wouldn't want to raise my child in a setting where they see their mother disrespected and believe it's okay to treat their mother that way with no support from their father? What kind of example does that set the kids? Or what if my daughters are treated differently from my sons by tradition? It's better to walk away than spend years of fighting between 2 stubborn parties.
Understandably, it's difficult because they love their family and how the culture works. So I don't really want to force my loved one to choose between his family or me. He has to make that choice himself and if he can't? That's alright I'll make my choice as well and leave. That kind of heartbreak isn't worth it in the end.

I'm sorry but if the dude sides with parents on a 100%, why would I plan a future with this dude? No, it aint worth it.
In laws should be respected and cared for but when it comes to decision making and traditions they should not have a say on their kids relationship. Once you raise someone and they marry to another person, you dont get to command in that relationship. Periodt.
