The annoying part about this saying is that almost everyone interprets it wrong. The translation "I think therefore I am" is the most popular so most people think its the equivalent of saying "I am my thoughts" or "my thoughts create me" when what Descartes meant was actually
"The fact that I can think proves that I exist"
He wasn't saying our existence is equivalent to our thoughts. It was his metaphysical philosophy to reason that even though the world may be an illusion, my existence is not
