The reason there was a lot of weird stuff about Japan on that album is because the name Pinkerton is referring to Sgt. Pinkerton from Madame Butterfly, an opera about an American soldier who falls in love with (IIRC) a questionably aged geisha, grooms and marries her. So basically Rivers is saying heās Pinkerton because he has an obsession with Japanese girls :/

I think that it's mostly because of the fan base, not the band itself. So many people I've met who were unironically into Weezer have been total chores about it

Itās been a while since I first listened to Pinkerton, and the jury is still out on whether or not I liked it.

Honestly, even though some lyrics on Pinkerton make me viscerally cringe sometimes when I hear them, I feel like thatās part of what makes it so special.
Some artists and bands make music that is supposed to be edgy and ādarkā but when I feel like the most genuine ādarkā music that is so open to the point of embarrassment. People have flaws and when you expose them for all to see especially when youāre a well known figure, itās really awkward and embarrassing. But thatās the point, itās going to be embarrassing. You canāt show your true self, including all your flaws, and it not be embarrassing.
I havenāt actually listened to weezer since high school, but I remember listening to Pinkerton and being able to relate to so much of the lyrics (maybe not the part about 18 year old Japanese girls lol). Itās the perfect album for insecure teens with self esteem issues.
