In this experiment, hydrogen gas is burned, and the distinctive blue flame is a result of Copper(II) sulfate (CuSO₄) mixed with sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄). When aluminum is added to this mixture, it reacts with the sulfuric acid, creating hydrogen gas, which is then ignited. The blue color is due to the interaction of copper ions with the flame. This demonstration shows the fascinating chemical reactions between the substances and the unique flame colors produced.
