Personally, being alone really doesnāt bother me at all. I think Iād be fine without friends around, but old is something I am not ready to admit yet being. I know I am older but I do not feel like I am old, inside of me.

Itās a legitimate fear. I wonāt get in a relationship just to not be alone. My ex broke up with me some years ago and I still havenāt started dating again but Iām nearing 40 and I havenāt found someone to even date. Society is not kind to non young women. I canāt bring myself to use the dating apps, I did online dating many years ago and it was emotionally draining and I didnāt find anyone that way. I have done all the right things like get involved in community and hobbies and itās hard to even find friends. Iām an extrovert but most of my friends are introverts or invested in their partners and kids. I am hyper independent when it comes to everything else except emotionally. Humans are social creatures that are not really meant to be alone.

Being in a relationship can be as lonely as we've ever been? Utter rubbish.
Spending every single day alone. Eating every meal alone. Going all day without speaking to another human. Knowing that if you die in your sleep nobody will even know much less care. THAT is loneliness.

Being old and alone is horrendous. There are worse things, I know. But, right now at 72, my list of dealbreakers is short. The top three will always remain, addiction, abuse, and adultery.
