Unrelated but related. I am a CT-MRI radiographer and I asked my friend, an oncology resident if there is a possibility my pimple that is unchanged for a month, is a basal cell carcinoma. After she reassured me that it was not, she told me she keeps coughing, and asked if it was possible she had lung cancer (we are 31), and I joked not to fret because, if it was microcellular lung cancer she didn't have to worry, because she would die before she even got to finish the sentence. And we both laughed. Healthcare professionals shouldn't be friends is my point. We are like google MD to each other.

As a kid my eyes would always flash red in photos, and my brother wondered why. So he looked it up and WebMD said this was a common thing with people who might have eye cancer. So I get home one day and my family is sitting dramatically at the table , and they ask me to sit down. “Buddy, we think you have eye cancer” . It was a whole thing 🤣 I had just come in from playing soccer and thought it was ridiculous. Turns out I was right. No eye cancer

Frankly I think it's a good thing that the internet tells you the worst, it's extra motivation to just go check the thing with a specialist like you should.

Self diagnosing is like prompt engineering. If you’re not getting good results you’re asking the wrong questions.

I have a friend who was getting a vasectomy and the nurse while checking if he was properly prepped recognized him and said “Hey! You’re my blockbuster guy!” He was mortified 😂

I had a relative older than me that thought she had an STD but was scared. So she had me call the hotline for her. Of course saying "My friend" they didn't believe me. Until they asked if it burns or smells. I was maybe 13 & said, I will do a lot of things but I'm not putting my face there! The woman apologized & gave me questions to ask her directly.

Our Dutch webMD almost always list cancer as an option for any symptom, but is pretty good about listing the most likely options first and often how long you should give it to clear up on it's own before seeing a doctor.
