You know, I impulsively wanted to say youâre wrong- but I think you make an excellent point. If itâs a defect, thatâs not really the building owners fault. If itâs a maintenance issue, thatâs not really the installers fault. If it was installed improperly, thatâs not really the manufacturerâs fault.
There really should be one party with 100% fault here.

Did the building's owner have the elevator inspected and maintenanced regularly? If not, sue the building owner. If so, sue the maintenance company for negligence. Last option would be to sue the manufacturer if it was caused by faulty parts that would have appeared good in routine maintenance.

Just as the evidence against one plaintiff can hurt all, evidence, which helps one, can help all.
I think the important thing to take into account is the ability for the defendant to try to pass the hot potato to some that is not being sued.
