Sometimes class actions win small money for hundreds of thousands or even millions of people but huge money for the few lawyers who filed the lawsuit. On the other hand, if not for class actions companies could cheat or harm all those people without consequence because it’s not worth it for any one person to sue.

I just won $55,000 ($30,000 after lawyer fees and all that) in a class action lawsuit against JUUL, and an additional $6,000 ($3,500 after all the fees) against Altra. Best decision of my life to agree to participate in those lawsuits.

Class actions are also useful when the injured parties have small damage amounts (say $100), but there are a lot of them. Companies with a poor business practice may not see an incentive to change if the practice causes minimal harm because it doesn't make any sense for the injured party to sue. But the threat of a few thousand or more parties who can bring action for their injuries in a single suit can compel a company to change a business practice.

This is why companies are working hard to strip you of the ability to sue in the class. Fortunately, Federal Courts continue to say suing as a Class is a protected act and cannot be revoked or removed. However, the ability to sue as the individual can be and you'll end up in Arbitration and that works best for the individual.

My parents were in a class action suit against a man who rented them a motor home, which turned out to be not legally drivable, but we didn't find out until AFTER we had driven all the way across the country and 2/3 of the way back. And he'd rented several such of these to other claimants.

Some of the other claimants: a retired Army general, 2 local detectives, a state policeman, an FBI agent, an IRS agent...
Not the best group of people to try to screw over.

People at my job filed a class action against my company, thinking we were all going to get a lot. They went with one of those we don't get paid unless you do companies. They did win, but after the law firm took their cut and then they said the payment for the 4 lawyers also comes out of that, all that was left add up to about $120 for each person!

i got paid out in a class action lawsuit for something i wouldn’t have sued them for myself. i saw the letter and thought, ‘wow — what a pointless thing to sue for.”

i changed my tune quickly when there was a check involved 😂

I was part of a class action lawsuit and received a debit card for approximately $20.00. However, I had to jump through hoops to use the card. It wasn't a straight debit card. Finally, I was able to use about $5.00 of it. It wasn't worth my time and effort.

I was part of the military 3M lawsuit that recently settled. I was one of the examples used in court due to severe hearing damage. It was nice to have a team dedicated to it but they took 60% and the actual settled amount ended up giving everyone a pittance even in the best case scenario. Feels like a lot of us were let down in terms of actual help. Just my experience i guess.

Mike you should do a video on mass torts. I would also love to hear what you think about Roundup litigation.

Only lawyers win in class action lawsuits. I was part of the CLASS action lawsuit against eBay. I did not even know it evidently we won. They mailed me to my house a paper check for $.10. 10 cents. I kept that check for the longest time just because of its craziness I lost it over the years. Wish I still had it.

20 Lawyers is kind, I have been on class action cases with hundreds of lawyers. Discovery costs are high so it requires a lot of resources

When class action lawsuits get big, the lawyers end up with a percentage of everyones settlement. This is a big reason people hate lawyers. They see the payout but not the work

Independent filers in a different court should be able to have their lawyers work with the larger class. My independently hire lawyer joins the class firm for the purposes of preparing the case, my lawyer gets idk 20% of my winnings and the class law firm gets 10% and I pocket the remainder. (Numbers may be wildly inaccurate)
